Jolyn Fry: Nettie’s kids - NFS

Nettie's Kids' is a portrait of my dad, my sister Rebecca, and me. It's a sweet and painful memory of childhood; I can't look back without considering how we were traversing the grief of my father's mother, Nettie (a queer war veteran), being institutionalized for my father's entire life. Nettie, my grandmother, lives through us all, and I held her memory in my heart along with my fathers as I put this piece together. Nostalgia being in this case a weaving of love and grief.  About the artist: Jolyn is a trauma survivor and has used the practice of art-making and mindfulness in the process of recovering self and interrupting patterns of dissociation. They currently live in Portland, OR and work as an art instructor/owner at Ulna Community Art Studio. In addition to be an artist, Jolyn also works as a clinical social worker and graduated with their MSW degree in 2025.
